Boy and Bie going Broadway…

Bie Sukrit the 1st Thai actor to go Broadway….

The recent announcement of Boy Takonkiet Viravan’s  resignation from the Board of Management at GMM Grammy leaving him with only the managing director of Exact and Scenario, created a wave of panic among fans.  The reasons behind his resignation were… there are lots of productions that need his attention.  There are also many directing projects that he is working on… and the biggest project of all is to take  ”Khang Lang Parp” Broadway.

After a handshake with his brother “Bie Sukrit Wisetkaew”‘, after traveling back and forth between Thailand and US many times and for many reasons, after Bie had a chance to improve his English, get additional training on singing and dancing… the musical production team in US finally gave  this Thai musical director a green light to bring “Khang Lang Parp” and some of its team to Broadway, USA.  Broadway is famous for theater musicals and plays and it is well known around the world.  ”Khang Lang Parp” in English is called “Behind the Painting”.  

But the most important point is… Bie Sukrit will be the first Thai actor to take the lead role on a Broadway musical.

Takonkiet talked about this international project…

“There were news over the internet that said “Behind the Painting”, the musical will be playing in US with Bie Sukrit as the lead actor and myself as the musical director… I’d like to explain a little about the project. Yes, the project exists and it’s going to happen but there is no set date or schedule as to when the musical will be playing, yet.

We have been working on the project for more that 2 years now. The project is a collaboration between myself and the US team. I didn’t say anything about the project because I wanted the project to move a little further along before I tell everyone about it.  

Let me tell you how the project came about… from my own work abroad during these many years, I was asked whether there would be a possibility of bringing Thai musical to USA and in English. It has always been my interest. I asked the US team to come and see our work in Thailand… apparently, the team stumbled on “Khang Lang Parp”.  They thought American audiences would be able to relate to the story.”

“At the moment… there is Bie,  Ja Sawat Busayarat and Nan Sarawut who composed songs for Khang Lang Parp. There will be adjustments on this area. David Shire who is a lyricist will compose new songs for the musical. Is it better? it has to be this way because the musical is created for the American audiences. Another thing that we are trying to  reach for is… we want to tell people about Thailand… about the good things in Thailand… Thailand is not only good for traveling or that kind of entertainment mentioned in Miss Saigon. When we have American audiences, the musical has to be in their language but the story will be told by a Thai director.  

Thirty years ago, when I was a student in US… no one knew where Thailand was… they asked… what is Thai? they thought we were Taiwanese. Now a day, when we said Thailand, they would think of Pad Thai. For that reasons, I want the presence of Thai entertainment in US… it will tell them where we are with the Entertainment Industry. The musical will include everything even Thai traditional dance.”

In Thailand, he is a pro when it comes to directing stage musicals… but Takonkiet said it’s very difficult to work Broadway level… “difficult in every step of the way… we have good communication… we have a great teamwork. We put our thoughts together, sharing ideas. We are creating something together… in fact, we got the best of everything.   Everyone brings out their best and put them all together. We want to create the best production possible.

Furthermore, there are two things that I am very proud of…

#1. Ja, our production designer who designed Mitake waterfall. The Americans were quite amazed by his creation… they asked “how did you do that?” where did you get the water from? how did you make the the water disappear?… Yes, we are taking Mitake Waterfall with us.

#2.  Bie’s ability to perform to Broadway standard. Bie has something other people don’t have. He is capable of doing many things whether it be singing, acting or the discipline.  He also has a unique charm that no one has... but the most important point is I didn’t choose him… they did’”♥

Bie Sukrit is an artist who has done works including stage musicals, Exact & Scenario production… Highlights of his works are Ban Lang Mek, Khang Lang Parp and Rak-jub-jai, the musical.

It is extremely rare for Thai actor or actress to receive this golden opportunity. But today, Bie was offered a chance to take the lead role on a Broadway musical.  Even though, the musical is still work in process… what transpired so far is considered a tremendous experience for him to undertake.

“At the beginning, I didn’t know I was selected for the role. Once I found out, it took me almost a year to decide… because I knew it would be a very tough job to take on.   At the same time, I started putting myself to the test by throwing  myself into training, take additional singing, dancing… including language classes since my English was not strong.

After that, I went to audition as a tryout.  After the audition, I came home, fixed my weak points and continued with my training. I still couldn’t make a decision. I consulted p’Boy.  I talked to my parents and my team members. Finally, I made up my mind… “okay, I’ll go for it! whatever happens happens!”

Many people whether they are TV actors or actresses,  whether they are stage performers… all said “this is a wonderful opportunity and a great experience for me to undertake”… that I am turning their dream into reality for them.  They all wanted me to go for it. Finally, I came to p’Boy and said… “I am ready to rumble with you!”

In terms of Bie’s English proficiency, fortunately Bie has some preparations in advance…  

“I must say that I was quite lucky. Exact often send their artists to get additional training in singing, dancing, or acting… whether they have project to work on or without a project.  Anyone who wants to get additional training… all we need to do is to let them know what we need training on.  

For me, I wanted to improve my English.  I thought I could use it with my work.. i.e. when I go to China.  I want to speak better English.  Lord and behold, I hit a jackpot!  what I have been learning is what I actually need for the project.”

It’s quite a challenge and a test to a Thai artist’s ability.  Despite a little trepidation,  Bie will stand and fight.  There is no backing down.

“Working in US – everything has to be perfect and exact.  That’s how the Americans work. I stressed out quite a bet.   As for songs, I normally sing pop songs… but David Shire is a composer of stage musicals… as a result, the melody of the musical is more of a narrative/ poem which is very difficult for me.  Richard Maltby Jr. who is a lyricist wrote such elegant and graceful scripts that I have a hard time getting the correct pronunciation of words.”

“There are many musical styles on Broadway. People here might be more familiar with the Phantom of the Opera. I met many performers on Broadway. Some can sing and some cannot.  Bie could stand and sing next to a leading Broadway actress with no awkwardness… he received many people’s admiration.

Let me tell you a story. That day, I was sitting at the back of the room. Bie was performing in English among Broadway performers, in front of a group of audiences who are musical directors and producers… That group of people have been in the business for a long time. Bie performed with no awkwardness. I was sitting there thinking… “how did he do that?”.

I was not the only one who felt that way… everyone was so pleased with his performance. Some people even said… this guy traveled over 6,000 miles crossing the ocean to sing in a language that is not his first language and dared to perform in front of people who have been in Broadway business for a long time. He was able to pull them into the story with him… in a way that the audiences could not take their eyes away from him.  I’ll tell you… It was such a great compliment.”

Soon, people in US will have opportunities to see Thai literary work on Broadway. The musical will be directed by a Thai Director.  A Thai actor will take the lead role… and for the first time,  a Thai production team will be working at the international level side-by-side with people from Broadway industry.

เพิ่งจะเป็นข่าวให้แฟนๆ ได้ฮือฮากันอีกระลอก สำหรับการประกาศลาออกจากบอร์ดบริหารจีเอ็มเอ็ม แกรมมี่ ของ “บอยถกลเกียรติ วีรวรรณ” เหลือไว้เพียงตำแหน่งกรรมการผู้จัดการ บริษัท เอ็กแซ็กท์ และซีเนริโอ ด้วยเหตุผลว่า มีงานโปรดักชั่นเยอะแยะ แถมยังงานกำกับนั่นนู่นเต็มไปหมด และอีกหนึ่งบิ๊กโปรเจกต์ก็คือ การนำพาละครเวทีไทยก้าวสู่บรอดเวย์

หลังจากจับมือกับน้องชาย “บี้สุกฤษฎิ์ วิเศษแก้ว” บินไปบินมาระหว่างเมืองไทยกับสหรัฐอเมริกาอยู่หลายเที่ยว ในหลายๆ เหตุผล ทั้งไปเรียนภาษาเพิ่มเติม พัฒนาทักษะทางด้านการร้องการเต้น จนในที่สุดก็ได้รับข่าวดี เห็นผลลัพธ์ เมื่อทางฝั่งอเมริกาไฟเขียวให้ผู้กำกับละครเวทีคนไทย บอย ถกลเกียรติ นำพาทีม(บางส่วน)และบทประพันธ์ “ข้างหลังภาพ” ไปทำการแสดงที่บรอดเวย์ สหรัฐอเมริกา สถานที่ที่มีชื่อเสียงด้านการแสดงละครเวทีโด่งดังไปทั่วโลก ในชื่อภาษาอังกฤษว่า “Behind the Painting” ที่สำคัญ บี้ สุกฤษฎิ์ ยังเป็นคนไทยคนแรกที่ได้เป็นนักแสดงนำบนละครบรอดเวย์

ถกลเกียรติได้เปิดเผยถึงโปรเจกต์อินเตอร์นี้ว่า “จากที่มีข่าวหลุดออกไปตามอินเทอร์เน็ตว่า ละครเวทีเรื่อง Behind the Painting จะเล่นที่อเมริกา โดยมี บี้ สุกฤษฎิ์ นำแสดง และผมเป็นผู้กำกับ ผมก็จะขออธิบายก่อนว่าเป็นโครงการที่มีจริง เกิดขึ้นจริง แต่ยังไม่มีกำหนดว่าจะเล่นเมื่อไหร่ ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นมาประมาณ 2 ปีกว่าแล้ว ที่ผมคิดกันกับทางต่างประเทศ แต่ที่ยังไม่ได้บอกเพราะอยากให้มันใกล้กว่านี้ ซึ่งผมขอเล่าย้อนกลับไปว่ามันเกิดขึ้นได้ยังไง จากที่ผมได้ไปเจอและทำงานในต่างประเทศหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ก็มีคนถามผมว่าจะเป็นไปได้ไหมที่จะนำมิวสิคัลไทยไปเล่นที่อเมริกา เป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ซึ่งเราก็สนใจก็ลองให้เขาดูผลงานที่ผ่านมาหลากหลายเรื่อง แต่ปรากฏว่าเขามาสะดุดที่เรื่องข้างหลังภาพ เพราะเขาคิดว่าเป็นอะไรที่มารีเรตได้กับคนอเมริกัน”

สำหรับทีมงานไทยที่ต้องไปทำโปรดักชั่นที่นั่น “ตอนนี้มีผม มีบี้ คุณจ๊ะ ศศวัต บุษยพันธ์ และคุณแน่นสราวุธ เลิศปัญญานุช คนแต่งเพลง ซึ่งตรงนี้จะต้องมีการปรับ เพราะที่เหลือคุณเดวิด ชายด์ คนแต่งเพลงจะต้องมาดีไซน์ใหม่ ซึ่งถามว่ามันดีกว่าไหม ก็ต้องตอบว่า ต้องยอม เพราะสุดท้ายแล้วเราทำให้คนอเมริกันดู สิ่งที่จะทำให้เราอยากจะไปให้ถึงอีกอย่างหนึ่งคือ อยากบอกถึงความเป็นไทย อยากให้เขารู้จักคนไทย ประเทศไทยในด้านดี ไม่ใช่แค่นึกถึงแต่สถานท่องเที่ยว หรือแหล่งบันเทิงแบบที่มิสไซง่อนพูดถึง เมื่อเราต้องการให้ฝรั่งดู ดังนั้นภาษาที่จะสื่อสารก็ควรจะเป็นภาษาของเขา แต่เป็นการเล่าโดยผู้กำกับไทย เพราะเมื่อ 30 กว่าปีที่แล้ว ตอนที่ผมไปเรียนเมืองนอก ทุกคนที่ถามก็จะงงว่า เมืองไทยอยู่ที่ไหน ไทยแลนด์คืออะไร หรือคิดว่าเราเป็นคนไต้หวัน พอมาตอนนี้ ถ้าเราบอกไทยแลนด์ ก็จะนึกถึงผัดไทย นึกถึงมวยไทย ผมจึงอยากให้มีวงการบันเทิงไปอยู่ตรงนั้นบ้าง เพราะฉะนั้นตรงนี้มันเหมือนกับการทำให้คนวงการบันเทิงของฝรั่งมองเห็นว่าเราอยู่ตรงไหน ซึ่งในเรื่องนี้จะมีหมดเลยครับ นาฏศิลป์ไทย (หัวเราะ)”

ในเมืองไทยเห็นเป็นผู้กำกับมือโปร แต่ถกลเกียรติก็แย้มว่า การทำงานระดับบรอดเวย์นั้นยากทุกขั้นตอน “ยากทุกด่าน ทุกขั้นตอนเลยครับ กับทีมงานตอนนี้เราก็คุยกันได้อย่างดี เป็นทีมเวิร์กมากๆ ได้ร่วมกันคิด ได้ร่วมกันสร้าง งานนี้จึงได้สิ่งที่ดีที่สุดของแต่ละคนมารวมกัน เพราะเราอยากได้งานที่ดีที่สุดครับ มันน่าจะเป็นผลงานที่ดี และอีก 2 จุดที่เราภาคภูมิใจก็คือ โปรดักชั่นดีไซเนอร์ของเราคือ คุณจ๊ะ ศศวัต ที่ออกแบบฉากต่างๆ น้ำตกมิตาเกะ ที่ทำให้ฝรั่งทึ่งกันมากๆ เลยว่า ยูทำได้ยังไง คุณเอาน้ำมาจากไหน และทำให้น้ำหายไปในฉากต่อไปได้ยังไง ก็จะยกไปทำตรงนั้นด้วย และตัวของบี้ที่ทำการแสดงได้ถึงบรอดเวย์สแตนดาร์ด ซึ่งเขามีในสิ่งที่คนอื่นไม่มี และเป็นความสามารถที่หลากหลาย ทั้งร้อง ทั้งแสดง และวินัย มีเสน่ห์เฉพาะตัว ที่สำคัญคือ ผมไม่ได้เลือก ฝรั่งเลือกครับ”

บี้ โอกาสทองของนักแสดง

บี้ สุกฤษฎิ์ เป็นอีกหนึ่งศิลปินนักแสดงที่มีผลงานเล่นละครเวทีของเอ็กแซ็กท์ซีเนริโอ ที่โดดเด่น ผลงานที่ผ่านมา อาทิ บัลลังก์เมฆ เดอะมิวสิคัล ข้างหลังภาพ เดอะมิวสิคัล และรักจับใจ เดอะโรแมนติกมิวสิคัล และโอกาสทองที่ยากนักที่นักแสดงไทยจะก้าวไปถึง แต่วันนี้บี้มีโอกาสได้เป็นนักแสดงนำละครบรอดเวย์ แม้ว่าตอนนี้จะยังไม่เป็นรูปเป็นร่าง ทว่าแค่ก้าวแรกในการเตรียมงาน ก็นับเป็นประสบการณ์อันยิ่งใหญ่

“ตอนแรกก็ไม่รู้ตัวครับว่าเป็นคนที่ถูกเลือก พอมารู้ตัว ผมก็ใช้เวลาตัดสินใจอยู่อีกเกือบปีครับ เพราะเรารู้ว่างานตรงนั้นต้องหนักมากๆ ก็ลองฝึกฝนตัวเองก่อน ทั้งฝึกร้อง ฝึกเต้น ฝึกภาษา เพราะภาษาอังกฤษเราก็ไม่ได้แข็งแรงสักเท่าไหร่ จนไปลองออดิชั่นดู ก็กลับมาแก้ไข แล้วเราก็กลับมาฝึกต่ออีก คิดต่ออีก ก็ปรึกษาพี่บอย พ่อแม่พี่น้อง ทีมงานหลายๆ คน สุดท้ายก็ตัดสินใจ เอาล่ะเป็นไงเป็นกัน เพราะหลายๆ คนทั้งที่เป็นนักแสดงละครเวทีหรือโทรทัศน์ก็บอกว่าตรงนี้เป็นโอกาสที่ดีมากๆ เป็นประสบการณ์ที่ดีกับตัวเอง รวมถึงการไปทำความฝันให้คนไทยด้วย เขาก็อยากให้เราสู้ สุดท้ายก็มาบอกพี่บอยว่าพร้อมจะลุยไปกับพี่แล้ว”

ในส่วนของเรื่องภาษานั้น โชคดีที่บี้เตรียมการไว้รอโอกาสต่างๆ อยู่แล้ว จึงไม่น่าห่วง “ต้องบอกว่าผมโชคดีที่เอ็กแซ็กท์เขาจะส่งศิลปินไปฝึกร้อง ฝึกเต้น เรียนแอ็กติ้งต่างๆ นานา ไว้ก่อนแล้ว แม้ว่าจะไม่ได้มีโปรเจกต์อะไรก็ตาม ใครอยากจะฝึกอะไรเพิ่มเติมก็บอกกัน ส่วนผมอยากฝึกภาษา เพราะคิดว่าฝึกเอาไว้เผื่อว่าเราจะได้ไปใช้ในงาน เช่นไปงานที่เมืองจีน ก็คิดแค่นั้น คืออยากพูดภาษาอังกฤษเก่งๆ กับเขาบ้าง ปรากฏว่าสิ่งที่เราฝึกไว้มันเป็นแจ็กพอตที่ตรงกับงานพอดี”

นับเป็นงานยากที่ท้าทายความสามารถของศิลปินนักแสดงไทย แม้จะเคยฝ่อบ้างแต่ตอนนี้บี้สู้ไม่ถอย “การทำงานของฝรั่งก็ค่อนข้างจะเป๊ะมากๆ ความเครียดต่างๆ มันก็เลยเข้ามา ในเรื่องของเพลงผมร้องเพลงป๊อป แต่คุณเดวิด ชายด์ เขาแต่งมิวสิคัล ดังนั้นเมโลดี้ต่างๆ ของเขาก็จะเป็นดนตรีแบบมหากาพย์ ก็รู้สึกว่ายาก คำต่างๆ ที่ริชาร์ด มัลต์บี้ ใช้ในบทก็เป็นคำสละสลวยที่มันออกเสียงต่อเนื่องยากมากๆ ครับ”

ด้านถกลเกียรติให้ความเห็นเกี่ยวกับการร้องของบี้ว่า “ต้องบอกว่า บรอดเวย์เองก็มีหลายสไตล์ คนอาจจะชินกับแฟนธอม แต่ผมเคยเห็นคนที่ร้องเพลงในบรอดเวย์ แต่ร้องแย่กว่าบี้มีอีกเยอะ และเขาก็ได้โทนี่ อวอร์ด แต่ในวันนี้บี้สามารถที่จะร้องเพลงเคียงข้างกับนางเอกระดับบรอดเวย์ได้อย่างไม่เคอะเขิน และทุกคนก็ชื่นชมเขาอย่างมาก อยากจะเล่าว่า ในวันนั้นผมก็นั่งอยู่ที่ด้านหลังของห้อง บี้อยู่ท่ามกลางนักแสดงบรอดเวย์กว่า 10 คน แล้วเขาก็แสดงเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ร้องเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ โดยมีคนดูเป็นพวกมิวสิก ไดเรกเตอร์ โปรดิวเซอร์ต่างๆ ที่ทำงานมานาน ด้วยความไม่เคอะเขิน สบายๆ ผมนั่งมองอยู่ก็คิดว่า “ออ มันทำได้ไงวะ” ซึ่งไม่ใช่แค่ผม เพราะทุกคนก็ปลาบปลื้มเขาหมด บางคนบอกว่า นี่คือคนที่ข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเลมา 6,000 กว่าไมล์ เพื่อมาร้องเพลงและแสดงในภาษาที่ไม่ใช่ภาษาแรกของเขา ท่ามกลางคนที่ทำงานในวงการบรอดเวย์ และทำให้คนดูเข้าไปอยู่กับเรื่องได้ จนเขาไม่อาจละสายตาไปจากเด็กคนนี้ได้ มันเป็นคำชมที่ดีมากๆ เลยครับ”

อีกไม่นานที่ผู้ชมจะได้มีโอกาสเห็นละครบรอดเวย์จากบทประพันธ์ไทย ผู้กำกับไทย นักแสดงนำไทย และทีมงานไทย ที่ก้าวไปทำงานในระดับสากลได้อย่างทัดเทียบกับผู้คนในวงการบรอดเวย์

ข้างหลังภาพ สู่บรอดเวย์

นวนิยายเรื่อง “ข้างหลังภาพ” เป็นบทประพันธ์อมตะของ “ศรีบูรพา” เนื้อเรื่องเป็นเรื่องราวของความรักต่างวัย ต่างสถานะ มีโลเกชั่นหลักที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ฉากสำคัญที่น้ำตกมิตาเกะ เคยถูกนำมาสร้างเป็นละครโทรทัศน์และภาพยนตร์มาแล้ว และในปี 2551 ถกลเกียรติได้นำมาสร้างเป็นละครเวที ในรูปแบบละครเพลง นำแสดงโดย แพทสุธาสินี พุทธินันทน์ และบี้ สุกฤษฎิ์ รวมการแสดง 49 รอบ

เมื่อข้างหลังภาพที่มีตัวละครเป็นคนไทย มีกรอบของวัฒนธรรมประเพณีวิธีคิดแบบคนไทย ต้องนำไปดัดแปลงเป็นละครบรอดเวย์ มีนักแสดงเป็นคนไทยเพียงคนเดียว ในบท “นพพร” หน้าตาของละครข้างหลังภาพบนบรอดเวย์จะเป็นอย่างไรนั้น ถกลเกียรติได้ชี้แจงไว้ว่า

“แน่นอนว่ามันต้องมีการปรับอะไรหลายสิ่งหลายอย่างอีกเยอะ แต่โครงเรื่องมีเด็กผู้ชายชื่อนพพร รักกับผู้หญิงที่อายุมากกว่า หรือฉากน้ำตกมิตาเกะ อะไรต่างๆ เหล่านี้ก็จะยังคงอยู่ แต่หลังจากคุยเรื่องการปรับเปลี่ยนกัน เราก็มองว่าน่าจะมีตัวละครตัวหนึ่งที่เป็นคนอเมริกัน ก็ปรากฏว่าลงตัวกับตัวนางเอก ชื่อในเรื่องจึงถูกเปลี่ยนเป็น “แคทเธอรีน” ซึ่งเขาก็ถามผมว่าทำไม อย่างที่บอกว่า มันต้องหาตัวละครที่จะพาคนอเมริกันเข้ามาในโลกนี้ให้ได้ ซึ่งผมโชคดีที่ได้คุณริชาร์ด มัลบี้ เป็นคนเขียนบทและเขียนเนื้อร้องมิสไซง่อน และก็เคยมาเมืองไทยตอนที่เราทำเรื่องนี้ในเวอร์ชั่นไทย ซึ่งริชาร์ดได้ครีเอตให้บทนี้มีเหตุและผลที่ทำให้ผู้หญิงอเมริกันคนนี้มาแต่งงานกับชายไทยสูงอายุ อย่างเจ้าคุณอธิการได้ โดยมีจุดมุ่งหมายว่าตนเองจะเป็นภรรยาที่ดี มีเรื่องราวต่างๆ จนมาเจอกับนพพรได้ในที่สุด
